A composite dental filling is a tooth colored filling material used to fill holes in teeth created by decay. Composite fillings are only used for small surface fillings where structural damage is insignificant. Many older adults may have gold fillings or an amalgam type of filling. These fillings may contain metals such as mercury and modern dental care is way more effective in hiding dental work to blend with the natural tooth color.

When should metal dental fillings be replaced?

If your metal dental fillings are defective or show decay, it's important to replace them. Untreated decay may eventually lead to an infection (abscess). In some cases, replacing a metal dental filling may benefit the long-term health of your tooth.

Generally, replacing metal dental fillings for cosmetic reasons should only be done after careful consideration and if your Dr. Palluck feels it won't compromise the long-term health of your teeth. Likewise, there's no need to replace metal dental fillings because of concerns about mercury in your fillings.

Most metal dental fillings are dental amalgam — a stable alloy made with mercury, silver, tin, copper and possibly other metals. Although concerns have been raised over the years about the safety of mercury in dental amalgam, there is no conclusive evidence to support that you're better off having amalgam fillings replaced with alternative materials. The American Dental Association supports the use of dental amalgam as a safe, reliable and effective treatment for dental decay.

If you're unsure whether you need to replace your metal dental fillings, ask your dentist to explain the options and help you understand what's best in your case.

We have been going to Somerset Dental for the last few years and are so happy that we found them. The front desk staff is very kind and attentive they know who your family members are and what’s going on. My hygienist is very caring and makes me feel very comfortable. I don’t mind seeing my dental appointments come up anymore. Dr. Somerset is amazing and her and her team show you they care.

I had a wonderful experience at Somerset Dental. The staff is super friendly, efficient and accommodating. My hygienist Ally was beyond knowledgeable and very gentle. She was soft spoken and really put me at ease. Dr. Palluck was equally comforting and I trusted her expertise. I’ve already made an appointment to have my teeth whitened and have some bonding replaced. I really love their practice and I’m actually looking forward to having my smile updated before a family vacation. Scheduling was super easy by the way!

The receptionists during check in were very friendly and accommodating. The dental hygienist was very through and felt she took her time and really cleaned my teeth gently. Sufia the actual dentist was fabulous. Provided me with another through exam and didn’t rush. Gave me some options to keep my teeth in tip top shape. I’ll definitely be coming back.
